National Toothbrush Day is on June 26. While it may not be the flashiest holiday, it’s the perfect time to give a little love to one of the most important tools in your oral health toolkit – your toothbrush. If you’re brushing twice a day (go you!), you’re already on the right track. But how you care for your toothbrush can make a big difference in how well it cares for your smile.
Check out our tips for keeping your toothbrush in top shape – and your teeth even healthier! Even with regular brushing, remember you need to see us every six months for a dental cleaning and exam. Call Dental Esthetics Studio at 678-661-5299 if you need to make an appointment.
1. Rinse It Right
After each use, give your toothbrush a thorough rinse with tap water. This helps remove any leftover toothpaste, food particles, or debris. Make sure there’s no gunk hanging around in the bristles. You wouldn’t want that going back into your mouth!
2. Store It Upright and Let It Breathe
To keep things clean, store your toothbrush standing up in a holder or cup so it can air dry. If you lay it flat or keep it in a closed container, moisture can get trapped, creating prime real estate for bacteria. If multiple brushes are stored together, try to keep them from touching.
3. Keep It Far From the Toilet (Yes, Really)
Gross, but true. When you flush, bacteria can travel through the air. Store your toothbrush as far from the toilet as possible, and keep the lid closed when flushing to help reduce contamination
4. No Sharing Allowed
Even if you love your family or your partner dearly, sharing a toothbrush is a no-go. It can easily transfer bacteria and germs that can lead to illness or infections. Everyone should have their own toothbrush. Use different colors to avoid confusion.
5. Change It Every 3–4 Months (Or Sooner!)
Your toothbrush isn’t meant to last forever. Replace it every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed or worn. A worn-out brush just doesn’t clean your teeth as well. Plus, if you’ve been sick, it’s smart to start fresh with a new brush.
6. Don’t Overdo It
Brushing harder doesn’t mean brushing better. Too much pressure can damage your enamel and gums – and it’ll wear down your toothbrush faster too. Use a gentle, circular motion with a soft-bristled brush.
7. Travel Smart
When you’re on the go, use a breathable travel case to protect your toothbrush. Make sure it gets to dry out once you’re at your destination, though. A constantly damp brush in a closed container is a bacteria magnet.
Bonus Reminder: Brushing Isn’t Enough
Taking care of your toothbrush helps you get the most out of your brushing routine. But even the best brushing can’t do everything. That’s why regular dental cleanings and exams at Dental Esthetics Studio are still essential. We can clean those hard-to-reach spots and catch small issues before they become big problems.
Celebrate National Toothbrush Day by taking good care of your toothbrush. And while you’re at it, why not schedule your next dental cleaning? Your smile will thank you!
